Artist statement

A few years ago I returned to figure drawing and watercolor, which I enjoyed when I was younger. I love the urgency and energy of short model poses and the beauty and light of transparent watercolors. I am drawn to spontaneity and to the tension between abstraction and figuration. I’m also inspired by the long tradition of artists working from the human figure and landscape. When painting, I hope to convey a sense of presence and place. When drawing, I will often use collage or an underpainting to begin a dialogue with the body on the page. I often start by assembling shapes and textures, then respond with ink to clarify structure or amplify movement. I value a sense of motion and expressiveness and aim to make work that both embodies energy and humanity.

Artist Bio

I was introduced to art at a young age by my mother, an architect. My great-grandmother was a painter and sculptor and ran a small art school, and my mother and sister both paint as well. My father is a scientist, and I was interested in both art and science. I pursued studies in both and became credentialed to teach students in both fields.

My professional career has focused on science education in schools and through outreach programs at science education nonprofits. I’ve always incorporated art and creativity in my teaching. The two fields have much in common! My work has also focused on educational equity and broadening opportunities for young people.

While I have always made art, in the last few years I have felt compelled to spend more time creating watercolor travel sketches and landscapes, small prints and etchings, and figure studies.
